Where’s the humanity?

  • This is a hands-in-the-dirt workshop led by two facilitators—Ami Lum and Kana Felix—who know how to push, hold, and elevate writers.

We'll dive deep into what character truly is: how to build compelling characters from scratch, know them inside and out, and make them resonate with your audience. You'll walk away with at least one fully realized character you can't stop thinking about.

Who is this for?: If you keep getting notes that your characters are "flat," "unbelievable," or "boring"—this is for you. If you're struggling with any aspect of your screenplay, this is also for you (because it usually means you haven't found the root of your character). And if you're brand new to screenwriting, character should be your foundation. You're in the right place!

  • “This class helped me leave my inner critic at the door and pick up a script I had been stuck on for way too long. The deep dive into character and story arc had me asking questions I had never asked before and gave me a renewed sense of excitement towards the project. Whether you're writing the first sentence or trying to crack that third draft- If you're looking to go deeper and work through it- I highly recommend this class.”

  • “Get It on the Damn Page is a must for any writer. Battling imposters syndrome, self-doubt and self-sabotage - having the opportunity to working with Ami allowed me to positively address these roadblocks while re-calibrating my approach and understanding of writing. I'm grateful for the opportunity and all the Ami offered us during the workshop.”

    — Paula C-M.

  • “Get It On The Damn Page is a brilliant workshop for any writer, established or beginner. Ami runs a supportive, friendly and effective group, offering personal support as well as a push to answer the tough questions. Her insightful assignments offer new perspectives and possibilities. She opened my eyes to a different way of tackling a very difficult and emotionally charged project. I highly recommend this workshop. It will give you a jump-start on a new story or help you navigate an existing script.”

  • “I have never experienced a workshop like this. I’ve been in other workshops that encourage you to show up authentically from where you are, but I have never had a workshop actually follow through with this sentiment. Ami genuinely created a safe, supported, and open environment. Concepts of formatting and technical aspects of writing were not the focus. Instead there was a deep belief that all writers already know how to write. We were working to share the blocks that got in the way. Be it imposter syndrome, inner critical voices, or other resistance. In our class, all of us were writing very personal screenplays. The tenderness, patience, and attention to safety that was taken with our writing created so much space for exploration, inspiration, and to explore our desires. If the idea of writing, writing anything scares you, or you feel like you don’t have the ability, the know-how, the experience, this class is for you. Ami has changed my relationship to writing, and to myself, and I’m so thankful for her class.”

    — Katarina K.

  • “Taking Ami’s Break Out Session, changed my understanding of screenwriting. From character development, to dialogue, to world building details, Ami has an incredible amount of knowledge. The time, care and concern she puts into everyone’s scripts and characters, is amazing, alongside her attention to detail. The safe space she was able to cultivate over such a short period of time, not to mention it being online, is a testimony to how much thought she put into this workshop. This industry is tough and it’s important to work with the best, Ami is that!”
